“I use this career as a measure,” Zahne continued. “I feel that he would be an excellent governor who would work in the interests of the whole state and would truly represent all citizens without respect to race, creed or color.”

Dr. Herbert Schnuch, national president of the Friends of New Germany and Zahne’s lieutenant, went even further.

“If former Mayor John F. Hylan should aim for the governor’s post of the State of New York,” he said, “we will support his candidacy because we Americans of German origin are convinced that the interests of the State would fare better in Hylan’s hands than in those of the other aspirants.”
