Funeral services were held at Temple Beth El here yesterday for Joseph E. Bernstein, Hudson County philanthropist, merchant and banker. He died Friday at his summer home in Elberon, at the age of sixty-nine.

Long devoted to the Hebrew Home for Orphans and Aged here, he was its first and only president, serving until his death. He was chairman of the building committee of Temple Beth El and a member of the board of managers of the Hudson County Tuberculosis Hospital. He was also a member of the Jersey City Board of Education.
