Love Conquers Law; 41 Czechs Remarry

Forty-two Jewish couples in the Czechoslovakian village of Kadec, who have been married for eleven years and who have 120 offspring, suddenly discovered today that legally they are not man and wife, owing to the fact that the marriages had been performed according to the Jewish law—but never officially registered.

All but one couple immediately agreed to remarry according to the law. One man, however, held out, declaring that legally he considered himself a bachelor, unless his rich father-in-law would consent to a second dowry. Thus the father-in-law is faced with the choice of granting a new dowry or taking his daughter and her twi children back.
