The active Women’s League of the Institutional Synagogue held on November 14 a very successful bridge party at the Associated Milliners’ Men’s Club Room in the Victoria Hotel. Proceeds of the affair went toward providing scholarships for needy students of the Talmud Torah of the Institutional Synagogue.
The Lecture Group Committee of the Women’s Division of the Federation acted as hostess to the officers of Federation Women’s Division and campaign chairmen at a luncheon on Thursday, November 15. The affair took place at the Hotel Delmonico, 502 Park avenue, and the guests of honor included Mrs. Sidney C. Borg, chairman; Mrs. Felix M. Warburg, associate chairman; Mrs. Joseph Brettauer, campaign chairman, and Mrs. Julius Ochs Adler, assistant chairman.
The Friday morning lectures on “Contemporary Thought,” sponsored by this Lecture Committee, promise to be one of the most valuable features of our cultural life. The lectures are to be given at the Hotel Savoy Plaza, the first having taken place on November 16. On November 23, Dr. Hendrik Willem Van Loon is scheduled to speak on “A Historian Looks at the Future.” Among the many prominent men who will interpret contemporary thought we mention only Professor Raymond Moley, Dr. Alfred Adler, Lee Simonson, John Erskine, etc. Proceeds from the tickets for the course—$11 for the whole series—will be donated to the Women’s Division of Federation. The Lecture Group Committee is composed of Mmes. Harry A. Goldberg, Ira Haupt, Alfred Hagedorn and A. L. Lowenstein.
The New York City branch of the Women’s League of the United Synagogue, of which Mrs. Israel Davidson is president, has planned a Chanukah Tea to be held at the Hotel Commodore on Wednesday afternoon, December 5, at two o’clock. Mrs. Sol. M. Stroock is the honorary chairman; Mrs. B. E. Kopelman, acting chairman, and Mrs. Louis Finkelstein, chairman of the arrangement committee.
The Jewish Centre of Baith Israel Anshei Emos, located at 236 Kane street, Brooklyn, plans a Monster Bazaar for the week of November 24 till December 2. Every evening a different feature will be presented and on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, turkeys and pies will be raffled. The proceeds will be devoted to the upkeep of the congregation of which Dr. Israel Goldfarb is the rabbi. Mrs. Berriman is Custodian of the Bazaar to which the public of all boroughs is cordially invited.
The New York Auxiliary No. 22 of the B’nai B’rith plans a bridge, entertainment, dance and midnight supper, all for the modest price of $1, at the Hotel Bradford, 210 West 70th street, for Saturday evening, December 15. The proceeds are going toward the maintenance of the Home for Aged and Infirm. Mrs. Alice Valencia is chairman of the entertainment committee.
The annual Fifty Dollar Dinner of the Home of the Daughters of Jacob is going to take place at the Hotel Astor on December 16 and promises to be unusually successful. Mrs. Peter J. Schweitzer is president of the home, located at 167th street and Findlay avenue. The home was founded in 1896, first sheltering a small group of homeless men and women.
