Envious of the millions of dollars which Jews are bringing into Palestine and apprehensive lest development of Palestine commerce weaken Syria’s influence in Near Eastern trade, the government yesterday announced that it will welcome Jewish immigration into Syria.
The welcome, however, it was made clear, is applicable only to such Jews who can bring into Syria sufficient capital to build factories and other enterprises in the country. Furthermore, they must obligate themselves to employ native labor only.
BORTIONISTS
Jews admitted to Syria under this law will be required to prove that they are not Zionists or, if they have Zionist ideals, they must officially renounce them. A concentration of Jews will not be permitted in Syria, it was indicated, in order not to encourage any aims for eventually uniting Syria with Palestine.
The purchase of land near the Palestine-Syrian border will be prohibited to the immigrants, the announcement declares. Any land transaction between Jews and Arabs in Syria will not be registered by the government’s land department if the territory purchased is located near Palestine. On the other hand, Jews will be permitted to buy land near the Iraq frontier, which is distant from Palestine.
