for about twenty-five miles, smoothly enough. Then the car began to wheeze and sneeze and jerk. Finally it stopped dead.

Salesman and client climbed down to investigate. When the hood was raised, lo and behold! there was no motor at all.

“Good God! But how did it run this far without a motor?” the astonished customer exclaimed.

“Just on its reputation,” the salesman declared.

That’s how it is with columnists, too. Except brand new ones like myself, who need a motor.
