An address here Sunday night by Rabbi Stephen S. Wise in which he is said to have declared “German Jews have taken Hitler’s persecution lying down” and “German Jews have borne themselves disgracefully since Hitler came to power” drew an attack from Rabbi Morris S. Lazaron of the Baltimore Hebrew Congregation (Madison Avenue Congregation).

“These statements,” declared Rabbi Lazaron, “are not true. I went into Germany last Summer. I interviewed not only representative German Jews but German Christians. I had intimate talks with men in the diplomatic group. I spent several hours with one of the leaders of the Nazi party.

“I can only report what I saw and know. My personal observations lead me to the conclusion that no finer chapter in the age-old martyrdom of our driven people has ever been written than that being written by the German Jews today.”
