An appeal to secure relief from existing Sunday Law statutes for those observing the Sabbath on another day than Sunday was sent to all members of the New York State Legislature by the Jewish Sabbath Alliance of America. Embodied in the appeal is a report of a survey, just completed, which the Alliance took of all Sunday laws of the forty-eight States.
The Legislature will be asked, in the coming session, to permit those who religiously observe a seventh day as their Sabbath to attend to their vocations on Sundays without police interference.
In its survey the Alliance points out that twenty States in the Union give better recognition to religious observers of other days than Sunday than does New York State. In seven of these States no laws whatsover regulate labor or business on Sunday. They merely require one day’s rest in seven. In twelve States exemption is granted those observing any other day than Sunday. New York State, however, merely grants a sufficient defense for work only to those observing another day of the week as holy time and does not include business, as is done in twenty States.
