Catholics who stay. Their church will be incorporated in the new ‘Aryan’ pagan, Wotan abomination conceived in the atheistic brains of Hitler, Rosenberg and Berkman, in which Christianity and the Holy Scriptures are repudiated and all religion placed under the heel of the State.

“Under no circumstance should the League consider the return of the Saar to Germany, unless minority rights and racial and religious freedom are assured.

“The bully of Europe seems to have terrorized the League committee into the perpetration of one of the greatest wrongs of modern times. If that represents the views of the League, it will prove a curse instead of a protection. It has destroyed every remnant of hope and respect in the League. In the future the League will be a lifeless thing fit only for world contempt.”

Mr. Untermyer was very optimistic regarding prospects of the boycott movement in the world, declaring that the movement was becoming stronger every day.

CRITICIZES BRITISH PRESS

He was severely critical, however, of the British press which, he claimed, had ignored the world boycott conference.

“I had always visualized Great Britain as the truest and greatest democracy on earth—most responsive to the will of the people—far more so than our own. I was mistaken. My recent experience has satisfied me that it is nothing of the kind.

“On the contrary, its newspapers are really less free and more subservient to the will of the government in power and its policies than any power on earth except Germany, where the press is the mere obedient servant of the State. The vaunted freedom of the British press is a delusion.

QUESTIONS SINCERITY

“Let me illustrate! Our conference lasted four days, and was attended by eminent delegates and speakers from many countries. It culminated in a vast meeting, crowded to the doors by thousands of people, and was addressed by such men as Herbert Morrison, the Labor leader, Dr. Paul Hutchinson of Chicago and others.

“There were dozens of reporters from leading British papers, but not a line in any of these speeches appeared in any paper of consequence. On inquiry, it was ascertained that this was through the influence of the German representatives in London who, of course, were kept fully informed, communicated to British authorities. The two governments are trying to negotiate one of these asinine agreements which, like others, Germany will keep or repudiate as her interests require. So the British press was instructed to boycott the boycotters. The radio broadcasting, being under government control, was inaccessible. Thank God no such thing is possible with us.”

BOYCOTT SUBSTITUTE FOR WAR

“The enternational Non-Sectarian conference held in London, resulting in the creation and organization of the World Non-Sectarian Anti-Nazi Council to Champion Human Rights, gives every promise of being a great world economic power. Before it is six months old it will, I believe, startle the world by demonstrating that an economic boycott, concentrated against a nation that has outraged and defied civilization, can be made an effective substitute for war. That is the experiment on which we have now embarked and in which fourteen nations have already joined us Many more are expected to join.

“Germany will learn that this “Ersatz” game can be played both ways. We already know of 510 articles formerly imported from Germany that are now, for the first time, being manufactured in America; the same is true of Great Britain. But that is a mere beginning. There is no reason why we cannot manufacture here practically all our needs that we have been getting from Germany.

HITLER PREPARING FOR CONFLICT

“With this irresistible force from all classes and directions cooperating the world over, it will be a question of a short time only when this cruel medieval reign will crumble from economic starvation. In that way only can the war be averted for which Hitler is feverishly preparing, with the aid of countries which, like ours, are shortsightedly bartering with Germany for the exchange of our raw manufactured goods made by semi-material, such as cotton, for the pauper German labor that will come into competition with our own manufactures, to the destruction of the latter. We cannot compete against the ‘dumping’ methods, ‘blocked’ marks and innumerable other tricks and devices to which Germany is being permitted to resort.

“We have no grievance against the German people; they have been caught like rats in a trap and are held like a vice in the terrorist grip of this despot.”

RECEPTION FOR DELEGATES

Immediately upon his arrival on the Berengaria Mr. Untermyer delivered a speech over a nation-wide hook-up heard here over WMCA. Accompanying Mr. Untermyer were Richard J. Beamish and Mrs. Mark Harris, members of the American delegation. Dr. Paul Hutchinson, another delegate, remained in Europe, where he will watch Saar events and return later to present a report to the Non-Sectarian Anti-Nazi League.

A public reception will be held for Mr. Untermyer and other American delegates this evening at the Hotel Edison. The reception committee is headed by George Gordon Battle.
