More than 5,000 butcher helpers and delivery men will be ordered out on strike “within a few days” by the Hebrew Butcher Workers Union, Joseph Belsky, secretary, said yesterday.
A mass meeting has been called for Monday evening at the headquarters of the union, 231 East Fourteenth street.
“The conditions existing in the meat and poultry shops indicate the necessity of calling a general strike,” Belsky declared.
“There are at least 1,000 youngsters employed on the West Side, upper Manhattan and Washington Heights who are paid six and seven dollars a week for seventy working hours.
“These boys, whose ages range from 18 to 20, not only deliver orders by car, bicycle or motorcycle, but also do actual butcher work in these retail shops. These boys are actually performing the work of men.”
An official complaint has been registered with the NRA by Louis Waldman, attorney for the union, Belsky said. The official asserted the union plans to call out its full-fledged butchers on a sympathy strike to help the cause of the helpers and delivery men.
