Coincident with the report that the French government yesterday had approved the settlement of 10,000 East European Jews in Syria, it was revealed that forces are already at work acquiring land for Jewish settlement.
Twelve thousand #unams of land, the Syrian press reports, were acquired this week by a group of Jews from Alsace. This land, it is reported, borders the Palestinian frontier and will be set aside for the establishment of the first of three Jewish colonies in Syria.
The French government’s approval of Jewish settlement in Syria came after several months’ deliberations between the League for Defense of Jewish Rights and the French government. Senator Justin Codart, president of the League, conducted the negotiations.
HIGH COMMISSIONER ACCEPTS
Count de Martel, French High Commissioner for Syria, who last year opposed settlement of European Jews in the mandated region, revealed to Senator Godart that as result of negotiations in Paris for immigration of Jews to Syria he now accepts, in principle, the admission often thousand Jewish settlers in Syria and Lebanon.
The Jewish Telegraphic Agency was informed that the first Jewish groups to be admitted into Syria will consist of industrialists, engineers and artisans. They will have the right to settle throughout the entire country.
The admission of Jewish agriculturists will require a preliminary colonization organization, it was added.
