A request that the government of Palestine increase its contributions toward the maintenance of Jewish education and health work in the country was made yesterday by a delegation from the Vaad Leumi, Jewish National Council of Palestine, which called upon High Commissioner Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope.
The delegation pointed out to the High Commissioner that the Palestine government was maintaining an elaborate school system for the Arabs, which ranges from elementary schools to modern trade schools, but had contributed practically nothing for the support of Jewish schools. Public health work among the Jews was in the hands of the Hadassah and local Jewish organizations, which raise funds for the work, Vaad Leumi representatives pointed out.
Huge government subsidies for Arab schools have long been a grievance in Palestine Jewish circles. Jewish leaders cite the fact that while most of the taxes raised by the government are paid by Jews, the benefits go to the Arab population, while the Jews are left to shift for themselves.
