Dr. Alexander M. Dushkin of Chicago, who recently was appointed to head the new department of Education at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, discussed with newspapermen the importance of the role Hebrew University is to play in the upbuilding of Palestine.
Dr. Dushkin, who resigned from his position as executive director of the Board of Jewish Education in Chicago to accept the post with Hebrew University, is sailing for Palestine January 8 on the S.S. Exochorda.
This will be the second trip to Palestine for the forty-four-year-old educator. Fifteen years ago he served as the first Jewish inspector of schools for the Palestinian government. He matriculated at City College and received his Doctor of Philosophy degree at Columbia University.
TWO AMERICANS ON STAFF
The Chicagoan is the second American to be appointed to the Hebrew University faculty, which recently added sixteen exiled German professors to its staff. The other American is Professor I. Kliger, who is now head of the hygiene and bacteriology department.
Dr. Dushkin disclosed that there is a twelve per cent shortage in the teaching staff of Palestinian schools.
The budget of the department of education, which is to start functioning in September, is only $7,500. This sum is to be collected by the American Committee for the Department of Education at the Hebrew University, which is headed by A. P. Schoolman.
The committee intends to interest public school and private school teachers in the new department and raise sufficient funds to carry on its work.
Dr. Dushkin is to be feted at a dinner next Saturday evening at Jewish Theological Seminary. Speakers will include Dean Russell and Professor Kilpatrick of Columbia University.
