Two thousand volunteer workers were engaged in a city-wide drive today as part of the two-weeks’ effort to raise the $1,245,000 necessary for the minimum budget of the Federation of Jewish Charities.
More than $500,000 was raised last night at the opening dinner of the campaign. Speakers stressed that fact that government relief projects did not end responsibilities of private donors toward those in need.
Neville Laski, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, who was the principal speaker, lauded American Jewry for its generosity toward the needy and pleaded for a deeper Jewish consciousness.
Attorney General William A. Schnader declared that government relief was inadequate and said there was an ever-growing responsibility for private charities to provide for the underprivileged.
Rabbi Louis Wolsey, of Congregation Rodeph Sholom, and Jerome H. Loucheim, chairman of the drive, also spoke.
