In government circles it was stated today that before appointing Mr. Auster, Major Campbell, the District Commissioner, consulted M. M. Ussishkin, head of the Jewish National Fund, Dr. Arthur Ruppin, member of the Executive of the Jewish Agency, and other prominent Jewish leaders, and that all of them were in favor of Mr. Auster.
CONFERENCES PRECEDE STRIKE
The aldermanic strike was preceded by conferences held during the past few days between the Jewish aldermen and representatives of leading Jewish organizations. At these conferences a solution was sought to reach a compromise. Those who opposed the appointment of Mr. Auster did not agree, however, to any compromise.
The postponement of the inauguration ceremony caused a sensation throughout the country. Further developments are being watched with great interest by the Jewish population, as well as by Arab leaders. In the meantime the newly-elected municipal council is deadlocked and cannot enter into its duties.
