Bertha Allar, it was said, was the only one actually brought into court and she denied she bought stock, but said she donated the money to the Pelley enterprises and was later given the stock when she asked for it.

Ford told the jury that the North Carolina “blue sky” law specifically declared it did not condemn isolated sales of stock and that unless the state proved the defendants made a practice of selling stock in North Carolina they are guiltless.

He also insisted that the state’s evidence regarding the alleged insolvency of the Galahad Press had been effectively controverted.
