Two declarations, one expressing anxiety over the existence of Jewish institutions in the Saar, and the other expressing hope that the “Aryan paragraph” will not be applied to Saar Jews, were issued today by the Jewish Community. Simultaneously, Dr. Lothar Rothschild, new Chief Rabbi of Saarbruecken, gave an interview emphasizing the fact that the situation of Saar Jewry is “dark and uncertain” and that the community places its hopes entirely on the guarantees secured by the Franco-German agreement in Rome.
The first manifesto of the Federation of Jewish Communities in the Saar, issued today, states:
“We hope that the quieted atmosphere and the state of appeasement into which Europe is now entering will also favor more peaceful and more just judgement of the entire Jewish problem. We are now fused with German Jewry. We desire to work together with the German Jews for the honor of Judaism.
ANXIOUS OVER INSTITUTIONS
“Our main anxiety, however, is for the existence of the Jewish communities of the Saar and the institutions which they maintain. It is not possible as yet to speak of the future of these institutions. We hope that our synagogues.
