Austria Eases Jewish Stand, Ludwig Avers

The Austrian government is now studying all laws issued recently in order to revise or eliminate clauses which give the impression of being aimed specifically against the Jews, Dr. Eduard Ludwig, for many years press chief of the government, announced today in an interview with the correspondent of Chwila, Polish Jewish newspaper of Lwow, Poland.

Contending that the mass dismissals of Jewish physicians employed by the government-supported sick benefit panels were motivated by political reasons, and not by anti-Semitism, Dr. Ludwig declared that Minister of the Interior Neustadt-Stuermer was reviewing the cases with a view to “rectifying all errors.”

“The Austrian government will never permit anti-Semitic winds blowing from another State to be successful here,” Dr. Ludwig asserted.

The surprising reversal of the Austrian government policy of ousting Jews from all public positions and disavowal of anti-Semitism contained in Dr. Ludwig’s statement was regarded here as the result of the unfavorable publicity received by Austria abroad.
