A system of overtaxation will be introduced in Palestine on new orange groves for several years, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency learned today from a reliable source.
This drastic measure will be introduced by the government in order altogether to stop or limit the planting of new orange groves in Palestine. The measure is proposed by the High Commissioner himself.
The Executive of the Jewish Agency, fearing that the proposed measure will affect Jewish growth in Palestine and may also affect Jewish employment in the country, conferred with a number of Jewish experts today on plans to oppose the government’s project.
“The government should not interfere with private initiative,” is the opinion of the Jewish Agency. Leaders of the banking institutions in Palestine are also opposed to the projected restrictions which the government contemplates in the citrus industry.
In view of the fact that the measures against the development of new plantations may also affect the Jewish banking system in Palestine, Mr. Hoofien, director of the Anglo-Palestine Bank was one of those present at the conference which the Jewish Agency held today in an effort to counteract the government plan. Mr. H. Viteles, director of the Central Cooperative Bank, and Mr. Tolkowski, director of one of the largest orange shipping companies, ### also participated in the conference.
