The Art of Musical Russia, which is giving a series of five evenings of Russian opera at Mecca Temple at popular prices, Friday, announced the cast for Tchaikowsky’s “Eugen Onegin,” which will open the cycle Sunday evening, February 24. On this occasion Efrem Zimbalist will make his debut as conductor.
The singers, with the exception of the soprano, Beats. Malkin, who is cast for the role of Tatiana, are all drawn from the Art of Musical Russia Company, last heard here in “Lady Macbeth of Mzensk.”
When Miss Malkin sings Tatiana, it will be her first stage appearance in New York. Born in Russia, the soprano spent her childhood in Germany, where she received her general and musical education. She studied under the Italian singer, Francesca Prevosti. In Berlin she sang at both the State and Municipal opera houses, appearing in many performances under the baton of Bruno Walter.
Miss Malkin came to this country two years ago as soloist with the Boston Symphony under Serge Koussevitsky.
The second performance, March 1, will be “Boris Godounoff,” with Georges Baklanoff in the title role and Alexander Smallens conducting.
