Seventy per cent of the pipes laid for the new waterworks system in Jerusalem, built eventually to relieve its usual shortage of water, are defective and will have to be replaced, it was revealed here today by government experts who arrived from London to establish the fitness of the pipes.
This sensational revelation has created a tremendous impression here, in view of the large sums spent for the laying of the pipes. The experts from London have established that only thirty per cent of the pipes can bear the pressure of the water. The other seventy per cent are a total waste.
In connection with this revelation, the High Commissioner of Palestine today conferred with the chief engineer, who is responsible for constructing the waterworks, and with the government geologist. The result of this conference was not made public.
