A blow to Jewish interests was meted out today by the municipality of Warsaw, which announced that beginning today it will take over the supervision of shechita, kosher ritual slaughtering, of animals which was hitherto supervised by the Jewish community and the rabbinate.

The announcement means that the Jewish community will lose part of its income derived from the shechita for the benefit of maintaining Jewish institutions. It also means that the Jewish population of Warsaw, largest Jewish community in Poland, will be entirely dependent for kosher meat upon the officials of the municipality.

An urgent meeting of rabbis in Warsaw today adopted a resolution of protest against the municipality’s direct intervention into internal Jewish affairs. The meeting was called by the Rabbinical Union.

A delegation of rabbis appeared before the minister of public welfare today to protest against the action of the municipality. The minister promised that the question would be dealt with in accordance with the demands of the rabbis.
