Several hundred delegates, representatives of religious, labor and fraternal Jewish organizations will participate in the fiftieth anniversary celebration of HIAS, the Hebrew Sheltering and Immigrant Aid Society, to be held Sunday at the Hotel Astor.

The celebration coincides with the society’s annual meeting, at which reports tracing its history from its inception through its development and growth as a worldwide institution, will be made.

The story of HIAS, graphic and dramatic, will be related by Abraham Herman, president. Daniel W. MacCormack, Commissioner General of Immigration and Naturalization, will be one of the principal speakers.

LEHMAN LAUDS WORK

Governor Herbert H. Lehman, in a message to HIAS, praised its activities and its fifty years of service in the United States. The message of Governor Lehman, received yesterday at HIAS headquarters of the HIAS, says in part:

“I have for many years been familiar with the untiring and unselfish work which the HIAS is carrying on. Your understanding of physical and mental, stress and your planned relief to meet these unhappy conditions have brought much help and alleviation to those in want and distress. I have always found the HIAS ready to step into an emergency situation, in war and in peace, and render efficient and understanding help. I heartily hope that you will be able, to carry on your splendid work for many years to come.”

In connection with the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary, HIAS is issuing a Golden Anniversary Book. The society has branches in numerous cities in the United States and is functioning through various associated societies and committees in twenty-seven foreign lands, including Argentine, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, South Africa, Australia and many European countries.
