Poland’s policy of overtaxing the city population while imposing low taxes on the peasant population — a policy which has seriously affected Jewish existence in Poland—will have to be continued, Minister of Finance Koslowski declared in the Senate last night.
“The preference given to the village population against the city population is essential in order to increase the prices on farm products and to eliminate the middleman,” the Minister explained.
MUST PAY ARREARS
Touching upon the subject of unpaid taxes, the Minister declared that it would be impossible to cancel tax arrears but that the government intends to make certain concessions for those who have paid their taxes regularly during the past few years.
The statement by the Polish Minister indicates that the protests of the Jews against the high taxes unjustifiably imposed upon them will not induce the government to modify the present taxation system. The Jewish population, concentrated largely in urban areas, will thus continue to lose its economic position under the burden of heavy taxation which is ruining Jewish middlemen and commerce.
Only five Jews were nominated today for membership in the District Chambers of Trade throughout Poland. The nominations were made for the Chambers of Trade in Lodz, Krakow, Lwow, Sosnowiec and Lublin. It is doubtful whether all the Jewish candidates nominated will actually be appointed, especially in the Lublin district. The Chambers of Trade in Poland practically regulate the entire commercial system in the country.
