A serious quarrel broke out today between the Bar Association of Austria and the Association of Austro-German Aryan lawyers, when the former ordered all members of the bar to remove their names from the so-called “Aryan Directory,” which was published as a guide in the boycotting of Jewish lawyers.

The Bar Association found that it is not in accordance with the ethics of the profession to be listed in discriminating directories. The Association made it clear in a circular letter that it intended to enforce its order rigorously.

The Nazi and pro-Nazi lawyers, who are organized in the Austro-German Aryan Lawyers Association, issued a communique today replying to the order of the Bar Association, and stating that they do not intend to remove their names from he “Aryan Directory.” In this communique the anti-Semitic lawyers allege that their names were inserted in the “Aryan Directory” without their being aware of it, and thus they cannot be accused of disregarding the ethics of the profession.
