The necessity of keeping Jewish children informed on Jewish current life was stressed yesterday by David Rudavsky, a member of the executive staff of the Bureau of Jewish Education in a list of official suggestions sent to Jewish schools throughout the country.
These suggestions were sent out as a bulletin of the Associated Talmud Torahs of Philadelphia of which Ben Rosen is the director. They recommend that the teaching of Jewish current events should be included as a regular subject in the curriculum of every Jewish school in the country.
The Jewish Daily Bulletin and the Jewish Current News, a special publication for children, were recommended by Mr. Rudavsky as adequate material for school children in their study of current events and Jewish life.
AIDS UNDERSTANDING
“An intelligible description of Jewish events in America and throughout the world introduces the child to a better understanding of world Jewry of today,” Mr. Rosen writes in a preface to the bulletin.
Mr. Rudavsky, in his recommendations, especially emphasizes the fact that the Jewish Current News was originally established by the Associated Talmud Torahs of Philadelphia to meet the needs for text material in Jewish current events.
USES J.T.A. SERVICE
“Two years ago,” Mr. Rudavsky writes, “the Jewish Telegraphic Agency took over this publication with the advantage that the periodical enjoys the full news service of the J.T.A. It is still published with the cooperation and under the editorial direction of the Associated Talmud Torahs, which insures to the paper expert pedagogical supervision. Jewish Current News is a weekly, appearing throughout the school year approximately from October to June. The paper is written in a proper style for children; it gives an objective, unbiased report of Jewish news, the world over; and in general meets the requirements of a news bulletin for young people.”
“The current events bulletin is usually sent to schools in bulk. In order to develop in their pupils the habit of receiving and reading a Jewish periodical, schools frequently prefer to have an individual copy of Jewish Current News mailed to the home of the pupil, though this arrangement involves a higher cost. Most of the schools providing systematic instruction in current events employ the Jewish Current News as the basis of the course,” Mr. Rudavsky emphasizes.
The Archive of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency includes articles published from 1923 to 2008. Archive stories reflect the journalistic standards and practices of the time they were published.
