Polish Rabbinate Revokes Ban Decreed Against Spain in 1492

A ban which Jews all over the world declared against Spain more than 400 years ago in reply to the expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492 was officially revoked today by the Rabbinate of Poland, representing the largest Jewish community in Europe.

While Jews have maintained friendly relations with Spain during the last few centuries, this ban has never officially been withdrawn. Puzzled over the status of the ancient edict, Jewish communities in Poland have inquired of the Rabbinate whether under the existing Cherem—the Jewish boycott—Jewish delegations might be sent to Spain to participate in the celebrations of the 800th birthday anniversary of the Jewish philosopher Maimonides who was born in Cordoba in March, 1135.
