A new wave of Jewish emigration from Germany started today when it became clear that the Nazi government will positively bar Jews from the army, thus isolating them completely as undesirable citizens.
Fearing that in case of war Jewish citizens may be barred from certain zones, now that they have been virtually declared untrustworthy for service in the German army, hundreds of Jewish families were today laying plans for leaving the country. Offices of Jewish immigration bureaus were besieged by hundreds of persons seeking advice.
RHINE AREA A PROBLEM
It was pointed out here today that the situation may become especially complicated for the Jews in the Rhine region if Germany should decide to fortify the Rhineland. Fear is expressed that in case of fortification the Jews will be ordered to leave the Rhine section and to move to cities where no secret military work is being conducted.
In the meantime the barring of Jews from the German army today brought new anxiety to the Jewish population in Berlin and other German cities with regard to the protection of Jewish life in case of air raids. While the entire German population is being drilled in special clubs to protect itself against possible gas attacks from the air, the Jews are barred from these drills by a special order from General Goering.
22,000 REICH JEWS IN ZION
The Zionist Federation in Germany today issued a statement to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency saying that approximately 22,000 German Jews have already been settled in Palestine since the advent of the Hitler regime. Seven thousand German-Jewish families have found homes in other overseas countries, the Federation declared.
