The government commissioner for the Lodz municipality today acted promptly to avert another attack on Jewish rights made by the anti-Semitic majority of the local municipal council.
The majority, consisting of members of the anti-Semitic National Democratic party (Endek), submitted a proposal to the municipal council to eliminate from the municipal budget any subventions for Jewish organizations on the ground that “Jews are only guests of Poland and are, therefore, not entitled to any assistance.”
The proposal would have passed if not for the government commissioner who vetoed it.
“The Jewish relief organizations are doing great and good work and are, therefore, entitled to benefit from the municipal budget,” the commissioner declared.
This is the second time within one week that the government commissioner has prevented the anti-Semitic majority of the Lodz municipality from accepting anti-Jewish projects.
The first occasion occurred a week ago when the majority of the Lodz municipality was about to vote for the dismissal of Jews from employment in municipal institutions. The government commissioner declared such a proposal violated the existing constitution.
