Julius Streicher, the most prominent Nazi Jew-baiter of Germany, delivered his first address here today in connection with the elections on Sunday to the Danzig Parliament.
Calling the population of Danzig “to free itself from the Jews,” the Nazi leader of Germany attracted huge crowds who came to hear the message which he brought from Hitler, whom he saw yesterday in Berlin before proceeding to Danzig.
Herr Streicher was especially bitter against the Rauschnigg administration, and declared that Dr. Hermann Rauschnigg “administered the city treasonably by favoring the Jews and persecuting the Nazis.”
Replying to Streicher’s allegations, Dr. Rauschnigg, chief of the Free City government, who recently resigned as president of the Senate, stated at a meeting today that he only protected Jewish equality in accordance with the obligations toward the League of Nations. He indignantly repudiated Streicher’s accusations.
PREDICT BIG NAZI VOTE
At the Nazi meetings today the opinion was expressed that the Nazis will obtain a majority of two-thirds in the Sunday elections to the Volkstag, which consists of seventy-two members. Such a majority would give them the opportunity to modify the present constitution of Danzig along the same lines as Nazi Germany.
The Jewish population in Danzig is entirely dependent now upon the protection which it can get from the League of Nations, since a reign of terror is feared as soon as the elections are over. Sean Lester, the High Commissioner of Danzig, in his report to the League of Nations pointed out that the position of the Jews in Danzig is at present very similar to the one in the Saar before the plebiscite there.
The arrival of Adolf Hitler at Danzig is expected Saturday in connection with the election campaign.
