U.S. Athletes Place in Jump Test at Tel Aviv

The United States team won second place today in the women’s running broad jump contest at the Maccabiad games, in which 1,200 Jewish athletes from all over the world are competing for championships.

First place in this event was won by the team from Poland. The Polish team also won the 60-meter dash for women.

The Betar, the Revisionist youth organization which was barred from participation in the Maccabiad, was today invited to participate after the difficulty between the Revisionists and the Maccabi leaders had been settled.

The preliminary games were in full swing today and included tennis, football, basketball, fencing, boxing and ping pong. The results of these games at the end of the day were as follows:

Palestine and Jugoslavia were defeated by Egypt in fencing; South Africa won the first three bouts in boxing; Germany won first round in ping pong.

In tennis, the South African team defeated Rumania and the English team defeated Greece. In basketball, Palestine defeated Syria.

Jacob Steiner of the American team was second in the 10,000-meter race, in which A. Horowitz of South Africa broke the world Maccabi record in 33 minutes, 11 seconds.

M. Sandler of the United States was second in the 110-meter hurdles. The winner was Charles Smith of South Africa, who won in 16 seconds.

The United States also came out second in the 400-meter men’s relay. Sam Koff, an American, was second in the broad jump.
