Evidence of the economic development of Palestine is provided by the annual balance sheet of the Ashrai Bank, which has developed phenomenally from small beginnings. The bank recently moved to its own building here, one of the most imposing structures in the city.

According to the balance sheet, the turnover during the last fiscal years amounted to £26,000,000. The profit was £31,000. Two special departments were created, one devoted to new immigrants and the other to securities.

Judah Jonah ben Isaac, born at Safed in 1558, assumed the name of Battista Giovanni Galileo on baptism and became librarian of the Vatican.
