In the presence of thousands of Jewish pilgrims from all over the country, and representatives of national Jewish organizations, the octocentenary celebration of the birth of Moses Maimonides, the Jewish philosopher and physician who is buried in Tiberias, opened here today.
The municipality of Tiberias was represented at the ceremonies by Zaki-Alchariv, Jewish mayor of the city, who brought greetings from the municipal council. Prof. Selig Brodetsky of Leeds University, member of the World Zionist Executive, greeted the assemblage in behalf of the Executive.
The celebration started near the grave of Maimonides with music followed with speeches by Jewish leaders. Soon after the celebration started, a pouring rain compelled the gathering to disperse until the evening, when the rain stopped.
A number of historians from several countries arrived in Tiberias today to study on the spot the legends surrounding the grave where the Jewish sage is buried.
