is to deprive the Moslem clergy of the irregular authority still remaining to them. This authority persists, helped by their distinctive dress. The more ignorant population continues to give them undue veneration and to attribute to them occult knowledge. The wearing of distinctive dress in the streets challenges the conception that all authority in new Turkey must come down from the lay Republican leaders. The same motive is behind the extension of the veto also to Jewish and other clergy.
