The London Jewish Chronicle, speaking of the law in Germany depriving the Jews of their citizenship, says:
At a moment when the Chief Rabbi of British Jewry is invited as an honored guest of the King to the Jubilee State Banquet, the Nazis are busy forging decrees to rob the German Jews of their nationality. There is no mistaking the sinister significance of the Minister of the Interior’s announcement on that point. Under the new Reich Citizenship Law now in preparation, says Herr Frick, Germans will have to qualify for citizenship instead of acquiring it by accident of birth. It will be an honor which those of German stock must earn. For these it will open the way to public office and “only those who bear it” will have the honor of serving under arms “for people and Reich.” The grant of citizenship will be made subject to definite conditions one of which, in conformity with Nazi principles, will be racial membership of the German people. This, then, is the final answer to the anxious question whether Jews would b allowed to enter the new Conscript Army, They will not.
GERMANY LOSES ITS BEST JOURNALISTS
The World’s Press News of London writes:
The recent decree of Dr. Goebbels, the German Minister of Propaganda, expelling nearly 1,000 Jews from German newspaper offices, completely eliminates Jews from German journalism. It also eliminates much of the variety and intelligence left in the German Press after the Nazi revolution, for Jews and Socialists were admittedly among the best newspaper men.
More important, however, is the significance of this move. For it shows the German Fascist identification with the Russian Communist plan of ejection of political opponents from journalism, and is the first deviation from the Nazi Press plan of organization of the German Press on Italian lines.
Recognizing the talent of his opponents and anxious to secure it for Fascism, Mussolini converted the majority of journalists by promises, bribes and other inducements. This explains the high standard of the Italian Press in comparison with the German, which has suffered so much from intolerance as to cause a rumor of the revocation of this anti-Jewish and anti-Socialist edict.
SPAIN IS PRAISED FOR RAMBAM TRIBUTE
The New York Herald Tribune, in an editorial, praises the Spanish government for setting up a monument in memory of Moses Maimonides. The paper says:
No Jewish son of Old spain—and there were many brilliant ones—could have been better chosen for an honor that is meant to proclaim Spain’s reconciliation with the Jewish world, for no Jew of the Middle Ages was so whole-heartedly devoted to the reconciliation of Occidental rationalism with Semitic dogmatism. After fifteen years of wandering he became in Cairo the household physician to the great Saladin; and, being saturated with both Aristotelian philosophy and rabbinical lore, he devoted his ample leisure for the rest of his life to focusing the searching light of logic on the Scriptures and on the traditional law of his people. The results were of intense interest to European philosophers for five hundred years after his death and are still provocative reading to both Jewish and Christian theologians.
BAPTIST PAPER HITS MOSLEY MOVEMENT
The Baptist Times of London carries the following editorial under the headline “Jews and Fascists”:
We have received a letter from “the Director of Policy of the British Union of Fascists” complaining of our comment on Sir Oswald Mosley’s references to the Jews. The writer is “amazed” and evidently annoyed that w# should criticize the leader of the Fascist movement. Baptists stand for freedom for themselves, and the rights they demand they are prepared to give to others. We have no sympathy with any movement that makes a plank in its platform the persecution of Jews or Gentiles.
