A warning that Jewish leaders must put aside desires for self-aggrandizement for the benefit of Jewry or be replaced by other leaders was contained in a report of the special committee on the president’s message, adopted by District Grand Lodge One of B’nai B’rith at the closing session yesterday of a three-day convention at the Hotel Commodore.

At the same time, the special committee on anti-defamation recommended “eternal vigilance” in safeguarding Jewish rights.

“Every manifestation of anti-Semitism must be checked in its incipient stages,” the report said. “The approach in the solution of the problems as they present themselves should be free of any venom or ill-will. The process rather should be a polite and cultured discussion with emphasis upon our constitutional rights and in appreciation of Jewish contribution to the life of our nation.”

RESIGNS {SPAN}WIDE#{/SPAN} SCOPE POST

It was announced that because of the objection of the American Bar Association to members serving in a capacity involving money collection, Judge Myron Sulzberger, chairman of the wider scope committee, was obliged to resign from his post.

The report dealing with Jewish leadership said:

“The time has come when the Jews of this country must demand that so-called Jewish leaders must sink all desire for aggrandizement and that their efforts must be directed solely for the benefit of Jewry, or they must be replaced by leaders who are unselfish and self-sacrificing.”
