Representatives of all parts of the Jewish community in England as well as representatives of Sephardic communities in Europe, attended today special services in memory of Maimonides, the Jewish physician and philosopher whose 800th birthday is being celebrated throughout the world.
The services were held in the Spanish-Portuguese Synagogue of London and were distinguished by a special ceremony which included three processions with the Torah and the lighting of a perpetual lamp in memory of the great Jewish philosopher.
Chief Rabbi Hertz delivered the main prayer while Rabbi D. B. De Mesquita of the Spanish-Portuguese Congregation performed the ceremony.
A large and distinguished gathering also attended a lecture on Maimonides by Prof. A. S. Yahuda, lately professor of Hebrew at the University of Madrid. The lecture was delivered at King’s College, London University, under the chairmanship of the Spanish Ambassador in London, Don Raymon Perez de Ayala, who is the most prominent Spanish novelist and poet of the younger generation. The Ambassador emphasized that the government of Spain is proud of the fact that Maimonides was born in Cordova, Spain.
