The hope that President Roosevelt will sooner or later come out with an official statement against the persecutions in Nazi Germany was expressed here today by Rabbi Stephen S. Wise, addressing the forty-eighth annual convention of the Independent Order Brith Abraham.
Rabbi Wise warned the Jews of America not to be meek and to protest energetically against any anti-Jewish discrimination in the United States. He spoke of the danger of anti-Semitism in America and emphasized that numerous colleges in America are nests of Nazi propaganda.
ITALY IS PRAISED
Reviewing the Jewish situation in Europe, Rabbi Wise praised Italy for its friendly attitude towards the Jews and emphasized that he fears for the future of the Jews in England because of the growth of the Mosley movement there.
Rabbi Wise praised Soviet Russia for its fight against anti-Semitism. He criticized the Soviet government, however, for its suppression of the Hebrew language and for the prohibition of the Zionist movement in that country.
In Poland the present policy of the government brings indescribable misery for the Jewish population, Rabbi Wise told the delegates at the convention. The danger of anti-Semitism in Rumania is great despite the fact that King Carol is very liberal in his attitude toward the Jews.
ATTACKS HUNGARY’S LEADERS
Rabbi Wise bitterly attacked the Jews of Hungary. The situation of the Jewish population in Hungary, he asserted, is very precarious, but the Jewish leaders there do not make the slightest attempt to fight for their rights.
Rabbi Wise appealed to Brith Abraham to participate in the upbuilding of Palestine and to establish in Palestine a colony named after the Order in connection with its fiftieth anniversary. He also appealed to the delegates to work hand in hand with the American Jewish Congress.
“The Order should concentrate on winning the Jewish youth into its ranks,” he said. “It should actively participate in all matters concerning Jewish life in the United States.”
Today’s session of the convention was greeted by Dr. David Lvovitch of the World ORT Organization. Mr. Wolkinson greeted the session in the name of the Denver Sanatorium and Rabbi William Margolies, in the name of the Yeshiva College of New York.
The Mizrachi Women’s Organization will celebrate its tenth anniversary with a give-or-get luncheon today at the Hotel Waldorf-Astoria. Mrs. Samuel Goldstein and Mrs. Mervin Fischman are in charge of arrangements.
