For the first time in the history of Latvia no delegates from this country will be sent to the World Zionist Congress which opens in Lucerne August 27.
The order prohibiting the existence of political parties in Latvia, including the Zionist Organization, is responsible for this situation. With the Zionist party no longer existing officially in the country, no elections can be held here for the Nineteenth Congress and hence no representatives can be sent.
At the last Congress Latvia was represented by seven delegates. An effort was made by Zionist leaders here to obtain permission of the World Zionist Executive to send the same number of delegates to the Congress without conducting elections. The request was refused.
Although the existence of the Jewish National Fund has not been prohibited in Latvia, the authorities have nevertheless issued an order to remove all the Jewish National Fund collection boxes from Jewish homes.
