More than thirty Poles were arrested today as a result of the anti-Jewish riots in Grodno, Poland, where sixty Jews were injured and the windows of many Jewish houses smashed during the week-end.
Eight Jews were also arrested in Grodno for forming a self-defense unit during the riots.
One of the Jewish victims, Israel Berezowski, 21, died today from injuries received during the riots. His funeral was held at dawn today in order not to provoke new disturbances.
POLICE PATROL STREETS
The atmosphere was still charged with tension in Grodno today despite the heavy police patrols guarding the streets of the city. Jewish mothers refused to permit children to leave their homes, fearing for their lives. All the Jewish schools remained closed.
An official report issued today by the Grodno authorities emphasizes that the riots against the Jews were conducted by under-world characters. The thirty arrested are described by the police as “rowdies.”
8 JEWS IN HOSPITAL
Of the sixty Jews injured, eight are now in Grodno hospitals. The local authorities are now in full control of the situation in the city.
An investigation into the details of the riot established that the mob that attacked the Jews and smashed the windows of Jewish houses was directed from a dance-hall where a clash between Jewish and non-Jewish elements of the underworld took place. It was during this clash that Wladislaw Kuscz was stabbed to death.
