Soviet Jewish Atheists Prepare for Holiday Drive

The Jewish Atheists Union of Leningrad has started preparations for an intensive anti-religious campaign on the eve of the Jewish High Holidays which begin with the Jewish New Year on September 28, it was learned here today.

It was also learned today that the Jewish Atheists Union has carried out a “purge” among its members, dismissing a majority of its lecturers because they were allegedly former choir boys or descendants of Rabbis.

A total of 474 Jewish families and 1,173 individuals, totaling 2,954 persons altogether, settled in Bureya, the autonomous Far Eastern Jewish territory, in the half-year from January to July, it was reported here today.

This number indicates a decrease of 114 families from the number that settled in Bureya in the previous half-year, but an increase of 300 individuals over the number settling there in the previous six months.

Most of the settlers are builders and mechanics, the report discloses.
