Dr. Chaim Weizmann, veteran leader of the Zionist movement, was today elected president of the World Zionist Organization at the concluding session of the Nineteenth World Zionist Congress. The congress had been in session two full weeks.
The final session also elected a coalitionary World Zionist Executive of seven members, consisting of representatives of all parties, save the Jewish State Party, extreme right-wing group.
The new World Zionist Executive consists of David Ben-Gurion, Moshe Shertok and Eliezer Kaplan, all of Palestine, laborites: Dr. Selig Brodetsky of London and Isaac Gruenbaum of Palestine, Group “A” General Zionists; F. Mottenstreich of Galicia, Group “B” General Zionists; and Rabbi J. #ischman of Palestine, Mizrachi. In addition, Dr. Arthur Kuppir of Palestine was appointed head of the special department for economic planning. Dr. Nahum Goldmann was appointed representative of the Executive at Geneva.
Returning to the helm of the World Zionist Organization for the sixth time, Dr. Weizmann terminates his four year’s retirement from active leadership of the world organization. He will devote himself mainly to the political tasks confronting the movement.
Dr. Weizmann’s participation in the Zionist movement dates from his early youth. Born in Russia, Dr. Weizmann was still a young man when he began to play a leading role in Zionist affairs. He was not yet thirty when he helped organize the Democratic Zionist Faction, the first organized opposition in the then young World Zionist Organization.
Dr. Weizmann was largely instrumental in getting the Balfour Declaration in 1917.
