An internal secret order was issued yesterday by Hago, the National Socialist trade association which hitherto was the moving spirit of the anti-Jewish boycott, instructing its members to
discontinue boycotting and picketing Jewish shops. The effect of this order is highly problematical, however, since Nazi district leaders are not compelled to obey Hago orders.
In the meantime, in more than forty cities and towns throughout Germany shops are refusing to sell food to Jews, a special survey by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency established today. Hotels and barbers in numerous communities refuse to serve Jews, the survey reveals.
While Hago has instructed its members to discontinue the boycott against Jewish enterprises, a new and different method of driving Jews out of business was today disclosed by the Voelkischer Beobachter, official Nazi organ and Hitler’s own newspaper. The paper reports from Coblenz that local authorities are closing many Jewish shops which had been well-established and enjoyed reputations of long-standing, on a pretext of “unsanitary conditions.”
The mayor of Wuerzburg yesterday prohibited the sale of municipal land to Jews. He also ordered that no municipal contracts be given to firms trading with Jews.
Arrests of Jews married to “Aryans” are occuring in large numbers throughout the Reich. Thirteen Jews and six “Aryan” women were arrested in Halle for alleged “race defilement.” Other arrests took place today in Liebenzell, Mannheim, Karlsruhe, Frankenthal, Altsdorf, and in numerous other places.
Not even foreign Jews are exempted from this activity, resulting from the most zealous enforcement of the newly decreed intermarriage laws.
