Miss Helene Mayer, German-Jewish fencing star, refused today to comment on the statement made by an official of Mills College, where she is employed as a language teacher, that she will not compete in the 1936 Olympic team unless she receives full German citizenship rights.
The official, however, asking that his name be withheld, confirmed the report that she had accepted the invitation of Dr. The odor Lewald, chairman of the German Olympic Committee, on condition that she receive citizenship rights.
Berlin reports quoted Olympics officials as denying that the acceptance had contained any condition. It was explained that Jews are barred from Reich citizenship under the race laws enacts by the Reichstag at Nuremberg Sept. 15.
Miss Mayer won the 1932 Olympic women’s fencing championship.
