Early rejoicing in Jewish circles over Foreign Minister Joseph Beck’s promise to protect Poles abroad gave way to anxiety today.
Re-examining Col. Beck’s statement to the Sejm Foreign Relations Committee, Jewish leaders expressed fears that it was worded to preclude protection for Polish-Jewish nationals in Germany.
Pointing out that Col. Beck had stressed that particularly energetic measures would be taken to protect Poles when they were discriminated against as Poles, Jewish leaders feared that Government aid would not be extended to Polish Jews in Germany since discrimination against them is based on their Jewishness.
In his reply last night to an interrogation during a debate in the committee, Col. Beck stated that all Polish citizens abroad enjoy Government protection, regardless of religion or race.
Jewish deputies have recently complained of discrimination against Polish Jews in Germany.
A demand for the expulsion of all the Jews from Poland was made in the committee by Deputy Puscyncki.
