Wrappers for butter marked “kosher” or “permitted” by the rabbinate” have been banned in Germany. Fifty-mark fines with prison sentences as alternatives were meted out to a number of Jewish grocery-store owners in Hamburg for selling butter the wrapper of which stated: “Permitted by the Hamburg rabbinate.” The wrappers were ordered confiscated.
