Premier Manuel Azana today told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that the Government is planning action that will help hundreds of stateless Spanish Jews living in France, Turkey and Greece attain legal status.
A law is being sent to the Advisory Council, the Premier said, making Article 23 of the Constitution, which provides for naturalization of persons of Spanish origin resident abroad, applicable to Spanish Jews living in the countries named.
Application of this article would greatly assist hundreds of stateless Jews, giving them legal status and Spanish protection.
Premier Azana, in the course of an interview with the Jewish Telegraphic Agency correspondent, denounced current anti-Semitism in Spain as contrary to Spanish traditions and spirit.
