About $16,000 was pledged for the Hebrew University in Jerusalem last night at a dinner of the American Friends of the Hebrew University at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel celebrating the university’s eleventh anniversary. The largest contribution was $5,000 from Arthur M. Lamport.
Co-hosts and speakers at the dinner were Dr. A.S.W. Rosenbach, president of the “Friends”; Samuel J. Bloomingdale, Elisha M.Friedman, Hiram J. Halle, Mr. Lamport, Edward A. Norman, Dr. Nathan Ratnoff, Dr. J. J. Golub, Roger W. Straus, Edward M. M. Warburg, Maurice Wertheim, Rabbi Milton Steinberg and Samuel B. Finkel, director of the organization.
Mr. Finkel said an enlarged quota would be sought next year to place additional German-Jewish professors at the university. Rabbi Steinberg said the university “is more than a haven of refuge for Jewish scholars expelled from lands of persecution, important as that function may be. It represents a significant instrument as for the revival of Jewish culture in Palestine.” A message of good wishes was received from Governor Lehman.
