Governor Herbert H. Lehman announced in Albany today that he will not be a candidate for reelection. He said he had informed President Roosevelt of his decision at a conference with him last February, at which time it is understood the President urgently pleaded that Mr. Lehman be the party’s standard bearer next November.
In making the announcement, Mr. Lehman explained he felt “the time has come when I may ask release from the cares and responsibilities of the governorship.”
Asked if the death Saturday of his brother, Arthur, had influenced his decision, the Governor said: “My brother’s death affected me very deeply. We were the closest of companions since babyhood.”
