Control of the famous German publishing house, S. Fischer Verlag, has now passed into “Aryan” hands, according to an announcement by the Reich Chamber of Booksellers.
Dr. Bormann, the last Jewish member of the board of directors, has resigned and the management of the house is now in the hands of Herr Sarre, chairman of the board, and Herr Suhrkamp, managing director.
The company is now considered “Aryan” although the majority of its shares are still held by Jews.
The concern was founded by Samuel Fischer in 1886. It first published Tolstoi, Dostoievski, Zola and Jokai in German, and brought out works by Ibsen, G.B. Shaw, Gerhard Hauptmann, Richard Dehmel, Thomas Mann, Jakob Wasserman and Arthur Schnitzler.
